Beautify Your Skin with Intense Pulsed Light Therapy

Age spots, sun spots, and other areas of hyperpigmentation can leave your complexion looking blotchy and unattractive, and unfortunately, no matter how well you care for your skin, you can still wind up with these issues. At the same time, enlarged pores, uneven texture, and tiny spider veins can combine to make your skin look old, tired, and worn out. At Elements Rejuvenating Med Spa, IPL treatments can help you treat all those issues — and it can even help tone up your skin so it looks smoother and feels firmer. Plus, treatments are quick and there’s no downtime.

How IPL works

While lasers use very specific wavelengths of light, IPL uses broad-spectrum light that spans a range of wavelengths to target an array of cosmetic issues, including those most commonly associated with aging. The beams of IPL energy penetrate skin to its deeper layers, causing “controlled damage” that initiates a healing cascade. The energy is absorbed by damaged cells, causing those cells to slough off while promoting natural healing responses to “regrow” healthy cells. At the same time, IPL gently heats the skin’s structure, stimulating the production of elastin and collagen, natural protein fibers that join together to form a strong, supportive network.

The collagen and elastin networks are what help your skin feel and look firm and resilient. When you’re young, your skin produces a significant amount of collagen and elastin to repair your skin and prevent damage. But as you age, your body stops producing as much collagen and elastin as it once did. A decrease in natural collagen and elastin production means your skin is no longer as resilient, and that means it’s more likely to sag and show other signs of aging in the form of wrinkles and fine lines. Your skin’s tone and texture can also change as a result of aging, or simply as a result of your genetics.

But firming up your skin is just one benefit of IPL treatments. Because IPL works to help your skin eliminate and replace damaged areas and dark spots, it’s also an ideal treatment for problems like age spots or sun spots, freckles, rosacea, and other areas of hyperpigmentation. IPL can be used to treat tiny “broken” capillaries or visible spider veins on your face, without the risks associated with sclerotherapy. Plus, it’s great for “tightening up” large or visible pores, helping your skin look smoother and more evenly toned.

Your IPL treatment session: What to expect

At Elements Rejuvenating Med Spa, we use the Venus Versa® IPL system to help patients get the results they want, based on their skin type, their needs, and their individual goals. The Venus Versa features TribellaTM technology, designed to transmit heat energy to the skin’s deep layers, targeting damaged areas without harming surrounding tissues.

Prior to your treatment session, we’ll apply a cooling gel to your skin so you’ll stay comfortable and relaxed throughout your visit. You’ll also be given protective goggles to wear during your session. As the applicator passes over your skin, you might feel some gentle warmth and even some mild “stinging” sensations as the heat penetrates to target damaged areas. After your treatment, you may have some mild redness and tenderness in the treatment area, similar to the way you feel after a mild sunburn. There’s no downtime, and you can go back to your regular activities right after your session.

Since IPL relies on your body to eliminate the damaged tissues after your treatment, it can take about two weeks before you see the final results of your session. While you may see initial results after just one treatment, most people benefit from a series of three to five treatments spaced about a month apart to achieve the greatest benefits. Regular “touch-up” treatments every six months or so will help you maintain your results indefinitely.
