Put Your Best Face Forward: Summer Skin Care Essentials

It's hard to ignore the allure of summer — the days get longer, the sun seems brighter, and everyone seems to be spending more time outdoors. But, those extra hours of sun exposure, higher temperatures, and humidity can wreak havoc on your skin. Fortunately, you can prevent UV damage that accelerates the signs of aging and avoid issues that make your skin look greasy and shiny.

Our team at Elements Rejuvenating Med Spa in Davenport, Florida, understands the toll that summer can take on your skin. By making the right skin care and lifestyle choices, you can have beautiful, radiant skin all year long. We offer the following suggestions.

Sunscreen

Whether it’s sunny or overcast, the most important tool in your summer skin care toolbox is sunscreen. Before heading outdoors, apply a broad spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen that has an SPF value of at least 15. And, remember, you have to use it multiple times if you’re spending long periods outdoors, especially if you’re swimming or sweating.

For maximum protection during summer, pick a sunscreen with an SPF between 30-50 and bring it with you so you can reapply at least every two hours to protect your skin. And, whenever possible, avoid catching rays during midday when the sun is at its highest.

Skin protection

Spending time in the sun may be relaxing, but it can cause irreversible skin damage, especially if you burn. Not only can excessive sun exposure make your skin age prematurely, but it also increases your risk of melanoma, the deadliest skin cancer. One in five adults has skin cancer by age 70, making it the most common form of cancer in the United States.

When you can’t avoid the sun’s rays, make your own shade by wearing a wide-brimmed hat and clothes with Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF). These specially designed garments shield your skin from UV rays like really good sunscreen. Can’t find these specialty items? No sweat! Check your closet for light-colored clothes made of unbleached cotton or tight weaves that reflect the sun and keep it from reaching your skin.

Hydration

Staying hydrated is essential for radiant skin, but it’s easy to get dried out in summer. When the mercury rises, help keep your skin moisturized in two ways. First, drink at least 10-12 glasses of water each day and eat plenty of naturally hydrating foods, like fruits. Second, make sure you use the right skin care products based on your skin type and lifestyle.

As skin care experts, we recommend SkinCeuticals® and Eminence® Organic Skin Care. These clinically proven skin care products work for every skin type to keep your skin clean, moisturized, glowing, and healthy all summer long.

We also provide aesthetic services like facials and hydrafacials, to rehydrate and create youthful, supple skin. Based on your unique needs, we can recommend the perfect skin care routine to help keep you moisturized and hydrated all summer long.
