What Is Microneedling and Why Is Everyone Raving About it?

Microneedling — with or without the boost of radiofrequency (RF) energy —is rapidly becoming one of the most popular treatments for fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, and sagging skin. Unlike fillers that simply “plump up” lines and wrinkles, microneedling helps promote natural collagen development in the deeper layers of skin to repair sun damage, wrinkles, and more. Even better: Despite its “scary” name, microneedling is surprisingly comfortable.

Rebuilding collagen

Collagen is an important component of your skin. The tiny fibers join together to form a strong network that supports your skin’s structure, keeping your skin firm and resilient so it’s a lot more difficult for lines and wrinkles to form. Collagen also helps keep our skin from sagging and becoming loose or lax. The fibers also play a very important role in skin healing.

When we’re younger, we produce plenty of collagen. But as we get older, that collagen production drops off substantially. That’s one of the major reasons why our skin starts to sag and lines and wrinkles become a lot more visible. Because microneedling helps ramp up the production of collagen in the deeper layers of our skin, the treatments help restore skin’s elasticity and firmness, reducing the appearance of lines while helping skin look and feel more resilient.

How microneedling works

Microneedling uses a series of very fine, small needles to create tiny channels in your skin. These channels create “controlled injuries” in your skin that trigger natural healing responses. When your skin senses it’s been injured, it begins producing more collagen to help heal those injuries. As the collagen networks form, they help your skin feel and look firmer while also diminishing the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

Amp it up with RF energy

When you choose microneedling with RF energy, the needles do more than create tiny wound channels. They also deliver safe, healing RF energy into the deepest layers your skin, which turns up the volume on collagen production. The  energy extends more deeply than the needles themselves can reach, so you’re rejuvenating at a much more profound level.

But the RF energy doesn’t just stimulate the production of new collagen and elastin. By heating the inner layers of your skin, the deepest layers of collagen contract and strengthen during the therapy itself. You’ll notice that your face looks and feels tighter directly after your treatment. As with traditional microneedling, the benefits continue to accrue over the next few months.

Both traditional and RF microneedling can be used in combination with nutraceuticals and other skin care products. The tiny channels created during the treatment help products penetrate more deeply and more consistently for even greater benefits.  At Elements Rejuvenating Med Spa, we use products like vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and stem cell solutions during microneedling treatments to provide custom solutions for an array of skin issues related to aging and sun damage. Plus, microneedling can be repeated on a routine basis to continue rebuilding collagen, so you can maintain your results indefinitely.

What to expect during a microneedling session

Even though the name might be a little daunting, most people report little to no discomfort during or after their microneedling session. Before your session begins, we’ll apply a topical anesthetic to your skin to numb it. Once the area is completely numb, your provider will pass the microneedling device over your skin, allowing the tiny microneedles to make those even tinier channels inside your skin. Most treatments take about a half hour to complete.

After your treatment, your skin will be flushed — kind of like after a mild sunburn. Depending on the area and issue being treated as well as your skin type, you might have some very mild bleeding. Both these issues will resolve soon after your treatment.

Collagen production will begin immediately. You may notice a change in the texture and look of your skin directly after RF microneedling. About two weeks after a traditional microneedling session, you’ll see your initial results.

Your skin continues  to remodel and improve for a few weeks to months afterward as more collagen is produced. Most patients benefit from regular follow-up treatments to achieve maximum benefits.

Microneedling is very versatile. At Elements Rejuvenating Med Spa, we offer treatments to address issues like:
