You Don't Have to Live with Acne: Here's How Microneedling Can Help

Acne is no fun. Whether it’s the moment you first begin to break out, the angst of trying to get rid of your zits, or the scars they can leave behind, there’s no part of acne that makes you feel better about yourself — particularly when you look in the mirror.

Hundreds of treatments have been tried over the years, with some more effective than others. A new method for treating acne and acne scars, though, is gaining traction as patients are seeing great results.

Microneedling may be exactly what you need to help your skin fight the effects of acne, especially the scars that are left behind. The team of experts at Elements Rejuvenating Med Spa in Davenport, Florida, offers a look at the process.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a procedure that involves running a pen-like device with many tiny needles over your skin. It’s usually used on the face, where the needles prick the skin and create lots of small openings. The body responds to these skin-pricks as if they’re injuries, so it rushes to heal these areas by generating new collagen and producing new tissue in the treated spots. For that reason, microneedling is sometimes called collagen induction therapy.

There can be as many as 100 tiny channels in each treated area, with each channel extending a few millimeters into the skin. As these openings heal, your overall skin tone and skin texture are much improved because your skin is replaced with younger, firmer, stronger tissue.

Because these new cells are healthier than the ones they replaced, the appearance of acne and acne scarring becomes much less noticeable. For best results, we usually recommend a series of microneedling treatments spaced out at intervals.

After the treatment

Depending on the situation, we may apply a numbing agent to your face before the procedure to minimize any discomfort. Afterward, we may apply a serum or calming treatment to the treated area.

You may experience some irritation and redness for a couple of days after the procedure, but this fades. Your skin has a renewed glow immediately after the procedure, and you should begin to see younger, fresher skin even as healing continues for a few months. Note that your skin is more sensitive to sunlight for a few days after treatment.

If you’re battling acne and acne scars, microneedling may be just the technique you need to minimize the colored, uneven appearance of your skin and produce younger, firmer, brighter skin that looks rejuvenated and refreshed.
